Rumors of the incandescent lightbulbs demise… July 6, 2009

Have been exagerated at least!

From the NYT:

“There’s a massive misperception that incandescents are going away quickly,” said Chris Calwell, a researcher with Ecos Consulting who studies the bulb market. “There have been more incandescent innovations in the last three years than in the last two decades.”

The first bulbs to emerge from this push, Philips Lighting’s Halogena Energy Savers, are expensive compared with older incandescents. They sell for $5 apiece and more, compared with as little as 25 cents for standard bulbs.

But they are also 30 percent more efficient than older bulbs. Philips says that a 70-watt Halogena Energy Saver gives off the same amount of light as a traditional 100-watt bulb and lasts about three times as long, eventually paying for itself.

The line, for now sold exclusively at Home Depot and on Amazon.com, is not as efficient as compact fluorescent light bulbs, which can use 75 percent less energy than old-style bulbs. But the Energy Saver line is finding favor with consumers who dislike the light from fluorescent bulbs or are bothered by such factors as their slow start-up time and mercury content.

SPRINGTIME COMES
FLOWER BUDS BLOOM
REFRESHING WISPS
OF COOLING BREEZE
RUN IT’S FINGERS
THROUGH YOUR HAIR
YOUR THOUGHTS WANDERING
NEITHER HERE NOR THERE
SNOW-CAPPED MOUNTAINS SHINE
IN THE GLORIOUS GOLD HALO OF THE SUN
EASING YOUR MIND
AWAY FROM BATTLING THOUGHTS NEVER WON
THE PUNGENT SMELL
OF EARTHLY SOIL
BRINGS BACK LOVING MEMORIES
OF YOUR CHILDHOOD PAST
WHERE YOU’D RUN THROUGH THE FOREST
WITH NO SHOES
AND NO SHIRT ON YOUR BACK
WILD PRAIRIE GRASS
TICKLING YOUR NAKED FEET
MAKING YOU FALL DOWN
IN LAUGHTER
AROUSING SLEEPING BUTTERFLIES
HIDDEN AMOUNGST ALL THE GREEN
YOU LAY ON YOUR BACK
AND GAZE UP INTO THE SKY
AS A RAINBOW OF COLORS
RISE UP
BRUSHING AGAINST YOUR CHEEK
IN THE PROCESS
MEANDERING THROUGH THE AIR
LIKE BEES IN A BEEHIVE
THE SWEET HUM OF LIFE
SURROUNDS YOU
IN A COCOON OF WARMTH AND LOVE
LEAVING YOU FEELING BREATHLESS
IN ALL IT’S GLORY
IN THIS WORLD OF GREEN
IN THIS WORLD OF NATURAL BEAUTY
YOU ARE TRULY FREE

From Mother’s Day 2009:
Presented and written by Lois Hoffman

The Web of Life

Seattle, a Suquamish Chief writes,

“Whatever befalls the earth befalls the sons and daughters of the earth. We did not weave the web of life; we are merely a strand in it. Whatever we do to the web, we do to ourselves.”

Today, as we honor all mothers, we need to take time to honor Mother Earth. Where giving her a hanging basket may not be the appropriate gift, a visit, an acknowledgement of all of the great gifts she has bestowed on us, is. It is time to show gratitude for all of the beauty and diversity and the life that she creates and sustains. Take time today to marvel at the flowers and the birds and the trees, and yes, the dandelions, too. Gather a bunch and give it to someone you love. Pick one that has turned to seed and make a wish that our eyes remain open to all of the beauty that Mother Earth has given us. We are practicing our principles when we are present with the natural beauty that surrounds us. Respect your Mother.
